Wow, now this is when technology works

Ain't It Cool News lived up to their site name today by linking to a TR2N story which explains just HOW two Flynns (Jeff Bridges character) both younger (1982) and current (awesome grizzled J.B.) will appear in the long over-due sequel.

The source story comes from io9.com.

That's amazing.

THING prequel looks like it's going forth

Starring R.J. MacReady's "brother."

Very, very skeptical. Esp. since there was no mention of a brother in the Carpenter film or original source material. And it if the story is centered on the Norwegian camp, wtf?

anyway...

So I finally saw Mother of Tears...

The unrated version and this confirms when I want some Dario Argento give me gialli or nothing at all.

The worst element of the story were the laughably bad witches, with the exception of the Japanese Kabuki queen who stalked Asia in the train station and train. I appreciate Dario's opinion on the occult and agree with it so I can't completely bash the man for the unintentionally funny (or was it on purpose?) gaggle of goth queens who surround the Mother of Tears.

The gore was pretty light for the unrated version. Yes, Giselle's death was pretty brutal, but I found the same actresses' death in Opera far, far more gruesome and unpleasant. Maybe because demons were killing her this time?

The baby thrown off the bridge was nowhere near as bad as many reviewers/spectators made it seem. And most of the gore seemed pretty tame. It was gruesome sure, but none of it felt real. And none of it felt like a Dario Argento death. Maybe that was on purpose too?

I like the character arc that Asia's Sarah went through and the melding with the spirit of her white witch mother (played by real mom Daria Nicolodi). As far as performances in her father's films, Asia's turn here was surprisingly low-key and convincing. Dare I say almost good? I'm not a fan of Asia and this is only the second film I've seen where she's put in a good performance.

At any rate, Mother of Tears wasn't awful, but it wasn't great either. Let's put it this way, I'm glad I didn't pay a cent for it (Netflix free trial), but I'm glad I saw it too. As I've mentioned, I'm already predisposed to Argento making gialli as that's the medium he truly excels in.

I'm glad Dario is still making films. I hope he continues to for some time. I'd like to see him explore other genres and leave the supernatural alone. He's made his point. I look forward to Giallo and whatever Dario does after that.

Mother of Tears, I can't recommend it since I'm not really a fan of the whole 3 Mothers thing. But if you like Argento and demons and silly witches, maybe rent it.

Best quote from Dario Argento EVER

from Rue Morgue boards, a Festival of Fear attendee asked Dario if he was concerned about how real witches might react to the portrayal in Mother of Tears:

Amen Dario!

While I'll try to be respectful of pagan beliefs, to me magic exists in the movies, imagination, music, art nd in nature, but not in books, spells or any religion.

Dario has it right.

Happy Birthday Terry the Tramp ~

Were he still alive hard livin', ridin' and loving Hells Angel Terry the Tramp would have turned 69 today. In some ways I can imagine him still living the lifestyle and perhaps even wilder than he was back then, and in some ways I think it would be impossible to picture him now.

Uncertain.

I can't say why I'm fascinated by this outlaw biker, I just am.

And unlike the bikers of today, Terry and the original members of the Hells Angels are the only bikers that float my boat. They were something to behold back then. And like I've said to mom, if I were a teenager in the mid-60s I would have hitched a ride to the West Coast and found me an Angel instead of a hippie because that's just the type of bad ass I'd be attracted to.

Terry died young thanks to Seconal...Valentines Day will never be the same.

I'd love to hear more of the interviews he granted Hunter S. Thompson as those on the Gonzo tapes were just the tip of the iceberg. I felt cheated: Terry came across far more intelligent, mirthful and educated than his inquisitor. This is a guy I probably could have spoken to for hours, and yes, probably would have done some other things with.

So Terry thanks for being you: independent, self-destructive, proud, free and just a little crazy. Hope the eternal run you're on now is as fun as those here.

Over and far out...

"That can't be good" - Neither can this movie...

So I tried watching the animated take on Dragonlance and only a couple of minutes into the film, I can clearly say, This doeth sucketh.

I loved the Dragonlance novels in my late teens and early twenties. In fact, I still have a thing for Tanis Half-Elven (who bears more than a vague resemblance to Franco Nero's Keoma).

As weak as the early 80s style animation is, the voice acting is worse.

I couldn't get past the first 10 minutes. And I tried twice.

Wizards of the Coast missed an opportunity to do Dragonlance live action and after this really poor excuse at filming my favorite of the LoTR rip offs, I won't be surprised if we never see it.

A real shame.
